Residents in the Paicines area can expect better telephone service after crews under contract with Pacific Bell complete the installation of 18 miles of underground fiber optic cable interduct along Panoche Road.

The project began June 3 at Highway 25 from the Paicines Store and was expected to be finished by Oct. 24.

“We were supposed to be done last week, but we didn’t make it,” said John Binning, a utility worker with Leo Tidwell Excavating Corporation in Paso Robles.

“We should have it done in about three or four days, but you know how it is,” said Tim Binning, the project’s foreman and John’s father. “When you work underground you have to deal with a lot of environmental issues. It’s been tough, but this area is not too bad; this is a good area to work.”

The first part of the process is the trenching, which is completed.

“The next step we have do is to blow it underground and run it all the way down,” John Binning said.

About 10 miles of cable has been installed up to the Callen Ranch. Installation of the remaining eight miles is expected to be completed in the next couple of days.
