The San Benito boys volleyball team was defeated 17-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-16, 8-15 by visiting Palma on Friday night.
The Haybalers (5-9, 2-4 TCAL) came out a little flat but gradually started to pick up the intensity as the match went along.
After rallying in five games to defeat Alisal the game before, the Balers again took the game to five before losing.
“We need to seize the opportunity to win the games in three, especially at home,” said Baler coach Henke Mao. “We should be ready. As long as we can keep improving like we have, we should have a good second half.”
Tomas Rebecchi led the Balers with 14 kills, and Jonathan Crepeau had 12. Jeff Hawks had a team high of 39 assists.
“We came out flat,” Mao said. “We had some momentum, but they served tough and had a couple key blocks to get going.”
In the second game, San Benito was down the whole game but remained within striking distance. Palma was up 23-20 before pulling away.
In the final game, San Benito took a 2-0 advantage. But after two serving strings, Palma went up 9-3.
The Haybalers will play Tuesday against visiting Salinas and then will play in the 32-team Alisal Spring Fling in Salinas on Saturday.
The first game will be at 8 a.m. Saturday against Harbor. Fresno and Granada are also in the Balers’ pool.
