After opening the season against Palma last Wednesday, the Anzar boys golf team hosted the Chieftains Tuesday at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, the result was still the same.

The Hawks, which had previously fallen to Palma 202-227 at the Laguna Seca Golf Club in Monterey, were shorthanded this time around and lost 209-256.

Expecting to compile a similar score from their previous meet against Palma, Coach Will Trefts said three players were absent due to previous commitments, leaving only five players to compete against the Salinas school.

“That’s where we should have been, but we were shorthanded,” said Trefts, who was seeking a score in the range of 227 or 230. “But that’s why we play the preseason games.”

Palma’s Jack Leach medaled with a 38 on the par-36 back nine of San Juan Oaks.

Anzar’s Travis Williams led the way for the Hawks with a 42, while Tim Trefts shot a 44. Eddie Gonzalez compiled a 51, Colby Castro a 53, and Ethan Petznick carded a 66 to round out Anzar’s scorers.

The Hawks will have some time off before their next match, which will be the league opener against Pacific Grove, Carmel and York on March 11.
