Part of the new Highway 25 bypass opened Thursday, and the project is ahead of schedule.
It took only two days for the new road of State Route 25 to open. This afternoon, northbound traffic on San Felipe Road will travel on the new road as construction workers close down the old one. Barriers are placed between the new and old road to allow construction to start for the east side of the project.
Senior Engineer Kerry Theran said if there are no more holdups, the project could be done in mid-September. When the construction is finished, there will be two lanes going in both directions on San Felipe Road, he said.
When completed, the new road will bypass downtown and go around to near Safeway.
Transportation Planning Manager Mary Dinkuhn with San Benito Council of Governments said traffic near Sunnyslope Road and Airline Highway will soon see detours as well.
