Hernandez was invited back to work with teens as well as other residents interested in creative writing by the San Benito County Free Library and the Si, Se Puede! Learning Center, with funding for the workshop from the California Center for the Book.

During the two-hour workshop, Hernandez took the 17 participants through a few different writing exercises “to encourage that writing can be fun,” said Charles Miller, the resident service coordinator for Si, Se Puede! “He did one where he asked them to pretend aliens were taking over the earth and then let everyone write their whole life in ten minutes.”

Hernandez also asked participants to bring in a family photo as a starting point for a writing activity. This marks the second year Hernandez has visited Hollister for a workshop. He is the author of “Breathing In Dust.”
