MONTEREY

Behind seven goals from Josh Schafer, and four more from Nick Angulo, the San Benito High boys water polo team opened the Tri-County Athletic League Tournament Tuesday with a convincing 14-6 victory over Palma.

The win advances the No. 3 seeded Balers to Thursday’s semifinal round in Carmel, where San Benito will square off against the host Padres. Match time is 4:45 p.m.

Meanwhile, Schafer’s seven goals scored on Tuesday was one better than all of Palma, which fell behind in the first quarter by a 4-1 margin.

The Chieftains managed to close the gap slightly behind scores from Nick Yeo and Weston York, and trailed the Balers 5-3 after one quarter. But four goals each during both the second and third quarters by San Benito turned a small, two-goal cushion into a sizable 13-3 lead heading into the final stanza.

The second- and third-quarter output was all Schafer and Angulo, too. Schafer pocketed five of his seven goals during that span, while Angulo added three goals to the tally.

Tyler Reuther, Joe Larson and Jake Garcia each added one goal apiece for the Balers, who improve to 15-12 overall. Keeper Trevor Agan had seven saves in the win.

Tuesday’s win marked the third victory for the Balers this season against Palma. On Sept. 20, San Benito delivered a 12-7 win, while on Sept. 25, it was a 12-6 victory.

On the other end of that, though, San Benito’s next opponent, Carmel, has already defeated the Balers twice this season, including defeats of 14-4 and 11-9.

San Benito Girls Water Polo

The San Benito High girls water polo team took a 10-2 halftime lead and never looked back on Tuesday as it defeated Santa Catalina 16-3 in the opening round of the Tri-County Athletic League Tournament.

The win advances the Baler girls to Thursday’s semifinal round of action, where they will square off against Stevenson at Santa Catalina. Match time is 5:15 p.m.

For San Benito, the semifinal bout with Stevenson will likely be a closer match than Tuesday’s comfortable win over Catalina, which saw Caitlin Schafer lead all scorers with six goals.

Hannah Smith added four goals for San Benito, while Lindsay De La Torre pocketed three goals, Beka Torres added two more and Sarina Schnekenburger had one.

Keeper Marieke Liem had 11 saves in net for the Balers, the No. 2 seed in the TCAL Tournament.

It was the second time this season San Benito defeated Santa Catalina. On Sept. 22, the Balers defeated the Monterey school 17-2.
