The water fountain at Frank Klauer Park is now working for the children who come there to play.

Parks maintenance can be an uphill battle, especially for a city parks department that has a small staff. This seems to be the case with at least two water fountains at Hollister parks that Pinnacle staff reported out of ordered in the Jan. 18 edition.

One fountain, the one at Frank Klauer Park, was repaired just days later. City parks supervisor Marcelo Orta said a resident had noticed the fountain leaking and park staff turned it off until they had time to repair a piece that had been damaged during a freeze a few weeks ago.

The other fountain, at Valley View Park, formerly Southeast Park, is still out of service and Orta says it is vandals that are to blame, though his staff will get out to fixing it when they have time. He has hopes that the number of staff members will increase around April, thanks to funding from the Measure T sales tax initiative passed by voters last November.

As for now, he asks that residents who see someone vandalizing public property, report it to the city and to the police department.

“I looked up Frank Klauer and it has been repaired three times because of vandalizing,” Orta said, of recent breakdowns. “It takes one person to vandalize and it makes hundreds of people suffer for it.”

As for the calcium build up on park fountains, Orta said the stainless steel pieces are cleaned, but with a short staff they usually only get to it once a quarter because they are focusing on more pressing priorities.
