In hopes of changing Caltrans plans for improvements on Highway 156, the Council of San Benito County Governments held a meeting in May to discuss issues with the project such as widening the highway to six lanes. In a report to the board of supervisors, Supervisor Anthony Botelho complained of many issues, and called the current project “absolutely devastating to the county.”
With help from Dan Burden, whose attendance was paid by the San Juan Oaks Golf Club, the brainstorming session sparked the idea of possibly using round-a-bouts, a smaller frontage road and a four-lane highway.
Council members determined the use of three roundabouts at the intersections of The Alameda, Union Road and possibly Lucy Brown Road would replace the need for traffic lights. An access ramp would replace the frontage road, reducing the size of the road and access for bigger trucks, Botelho said.
The council is preparing a presentation to give to Caltrans on behalf of the county.
