Still waiting: Day 70.

The smooth concrete bowls and ramps at the Hollister Skate Park off Memorial Drive continue to attract throngs after school and on weekends. Skaters and trick cyclists careen through the terrain, usually avoiding what would seem to be the certainty of gory collisions.

Public works first visited the site in the Dec. 21 edition of The Pinnacle, and found that the park apparently is irresistible to users who assured themselves and others access even after the entry gate is locked.

A sturdy fence around the area had been breached, and the bowls are continuing to accumulate grafitti. Exactly 70 days later, nothing has changed, as this week’s photo illustrates.

The park is unique in that parts of it fall within the jurisdiction of the city while other parts are the property of the county. In addition the Veterans Memorial Park Commission also has say over what happens at the park. The multi-agency management may complicate speedy repairs, if conditions at the skate area are any indication.
