Editor,

I read with amusement, Mr. Mike Smith’s letter regarding the recall of Mr. De La Cruz.

For those of you who don’t follow such things, Mr. Mike has been railing against the recall of James De La Cruz, under the guise of being an unbiased part-time writer for the Free Lance.

In the interests of full disclosure, Mike should have told the readers that he has been appointed to two government committee assignments by De La Cruz. It is also interesting to note that Mr. De La Cruz is the only supervisor who apparently can’t speak for himself, as he frequently relies on his shill, Ignacio Velazquez, owner of the Vault restaurant to speak for him, as well as his “appointee” Mr. Smith.

The Committee for Citizens for Responsible Local Government wishes to remind the voters of not only District 5, but all of San Benito County, that the costs of Mr. De La Cruz remaining in office may be higher than the cost of a recall election. We wish to point out that the county has already spent $50,000 defending the baseless lawsuit filed by Mr. De La Cruz, and his vocal “spokesperson,” Mr. Velazquez of the Vault restaurant that falsely accused a former supervisor of making racial slurs.

The question to voters is which costs more, a recall of a supervisor not fit to serve, or the cost of keeping the supervisor not fit to serve? To the majority of voters, the choice is clear.

The committee working to recall De La Cruz is committed to running a positive campaign to restore ethical, competent leadership to District 5. We will not tolerate intimidation of the voters – that is why when one of our members recently received a threatening phone call at home it was reported to the police immediately. We encourage anyone else who receives similar threats to do the same.

We think the overwhelming majority of voters in this county support the recall, as evidenced by a recent poll indicating that over 70 percent of those responding were in favor of the recall of Mr. De La Cruz.

We ask that those who have questions regarding the recall attempt call (831) 630-0988, or email us at [email protected]. Visit our web site at www.recalldelacruz.com. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
