The Hollister Youth Alliance Dunne Park Project Team is scheduled to meet with neighborhood residents March 18, at 6 p.m., at the Dunne Park Clubhouse. The March forum is an outreach effort to share information about the activities at the park that are sponsored by the Health Trust initiative, Healthy Places, Healthy People Grant.
Park “Place Leaders” will share information about park safety, the Dunne Park Summer calendar of events, as well as gather the residents’ input to develop future priorities for enhancement projects at the park.
Residents will be informed about activities that are taking place at the park as part of a one-year transformation project. Place Leader Mary Anne Hughes, the executive director of Community Food Bank of San Benito County, will present information about the food distribution program that provides fresh fruit and vegetables to low-income families near the park. Place Leader Pauline Valdivia, Hollister’s mayor, will inform residents about issues associated with vacant homes in the City. Shawn Novack, of the Water Resource Center of San Benito County, will provide an update on the conservation garden project.
The Hollister Youth Alliance Change Team Leaders are soliciting feedback from the neighborhood residents to be included in the park safety plan that will be developed and proposed to park leaders and elected officials over the next couple of months.
Anaid Godoy and Rafael Rojas, HYA Change Team Leaders feel the rewards of hard work and community participation.
“The City is really helping us create change at the park,” Godoy said, in a press release. “We see more and more children playing on the playground. The probation department is helping with that effort, too. They have started the Lunch at the Park program that encourages probation officers to eat lunch at Dunne Park.”
The park project team is working to support this effort by looking for more private funding that would provide picnic area spaces and benches.
