More than 9,000 people welcomed the first day of the California Rodeo in Salinas on Thursday night.

Attendance was down about 100 tickets from last year’s 100th rodeo, but up 13 percent from 2009, according to a press release from the California Rodeo Association.

The first day festivities including a Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign aimed at raising awareness and donations for breast cancer research. The rodeo will donate $1 from every ticket sold from Thursday’s event to the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System.

Prices are $7 for children and $13 for adult general admission or $20 for adult reserved seating.
