Roe Martin, 79, passed away June 8, 2005, in Litchfield Park, Arizona.

Martin, a Salinas native, married Shirley Ojeda, a South County native and member of the San Benito High School class of 1946.

An accomplished rodeo contestant, Martin has the distinction of owning a record that will never be broken. In 1941, at the age of 16, Martin set a record that still stands for the Standing Start Stake Race. The Stake Race is the same as a Barrel Race, and both now use a running-start format. The Standing Start was discontinued a few years ago.

Martin was a feed lot manager all his life, working in California, Arizona and Oklahoma. He was also a past director of the California Rodeo Association. He retired 12 years ago after a heart attack.

In addition to his wife Shirley, Martin is also survived by his daughter Jane Ann Eaton, both of Litchfield Park. No local services are planned.
