For the sixth time this year, the San Benito finished in second place to Palma at a Tri-County Athletic League tournament on Tuesday at Old Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey.

John German shot a team-low one-over 37 to pace the Balers. Ryan Han placed second on the team, carding a two-over 38.

As a team, San Benito carded a 204 — 16 shots behind Palma.

The Balers host Palma at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at San Juan Oaks Golf Club.

“We are starting to play like we wanted to at the beginning of the season,” head coach Reggie Synegal said. “Hopefully we can carry this over.”

SBHS tennis

The San Benito tennis team stayed undefeated inside the TCAL Tuesday, dispatching Christopher 6-1 in Gilroy.

Without Kyle Skinner leading the singles group, San Benito won three of the four singles matches over the Cougars. No. 1 singles player Andrew Panger defeated Christopher’s Veasna Khay in straight 6-0 sets.

San Benito’s Nick Trillo won 6-1, 6-4 and Aaron Francis won 5-7, 6-1, 10-4.

The Balers swept the doubles play, winning every set.

No. 1 pair Jacob Panger and Sunny Singh won 7-5, 6-3. Skinner and Michael Ormsby won 6-0, 6-2. The Balers final doubles pair of Eric Johnson and Travis Mills won 6-2, 6-0.

SBHS volleyball

The San Benito boys volleyball team stayed atop the TCAL standings Tuesday, beating Salinas 3-0.

As the match went on, the Balers got better and better.

After winning the first game 25-20, San Benito beat Salinas 25-17 in the second game and 25-12 in the deciding third game.

The victory gives San Benito a 12-1 record inside the TCAL and a 20-3 record overall.

San Benito hosts Christopher at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

SBHS baseball

Behind four hitless innings from San Benito’s Jake Cabral, the Balers defeated Alisal 4-0 Tuesday to keep their one-game lead over Palma.

San Benito pitching allowed one hit in seven innings, as Cabral struck out eight batters and reliever Skyler Fuss struck out four in three innings. Alisal’s lone baserunner came with one out in the seventh inning. 

“The pitching was great as always,” manager Billy Aviles said. 

On offense, San Benito scored single runs in the first three innings to gain an early lead.

“It definitely wasn’t a pretty win, but we got the win,” Aviles said. 

San Benito, now 10-1 in the TCAL and 14-4 overall, hosts Alisal at 4 p.m. Thursday.
