Boys volleyball drops Watsonville in 3 games
Salinas

The San Benito girls swimming team took first in each race and the boys nearly matched the effort, winning all but three events, as the Haybalers easily defeated host Everett Alvarez last Friday.

The girls won their dual 123-32 and the boys triumphed by a 97-57 margin.

Demi Gatrell clocked a pair of Central Coast Section qualifying times at the meet, including the 200-meter freestyle (2:03.16) and the 500-meter freestyle (5:31.11). Gatrell claimed first place in both events.

Also hitting the CCS mark was Megan Geary’s time in the 50-meter freestyle (25.36) and Celina Stotler’s time in the 100-meter butterfly (1:03.52).

Other first-place finishes included Shelli Reed in the 200 IM (2:22.78) and in the 100 freestyle (56.32), Lauren Lango in the 100 backstroke (1:13.19) and Kate Schaaphok in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.35).

For the boys, the ‘Balers took first in all the relay events, while Brandon Drogemuller claimed the top spot in the 100 butterfly (57.18) and the 100 freestyle (52.11).

Kyle Reuther finished first in the 200 freestyle (2:02.83), and Steven Shattuck was first in the 50 freestyle (25.16) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.38).

“The kids looked great – really strong,” said coach Christine Schafer, noting the difficulty of swimming in cold temperatures.

San Benito will host Gilroy Friday.

“It’s gonna be a tough meet all the way around,” Schafer said.
