Boys Basketball
San Benito fell in its second game of the year, losing to Cupertino 54-44 in the first game of the Cupertino Shootout on Thursday.
The loss moves San Benito into the consolation bracket.
The Balers started well, finishing the first quarter tied at 15 with host-school Cupertino.
But it was the second quarter that did San Benito in. Cupertino scored 16 points and held the Balers to only 6 points in the quarter to pull away from San Benito.
Jordan Belton scored a game-high for the Balers with 20 points. Isaiah Acfalle added 10 more points in the loss.
San Benito’s next game is Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Cupertino High.
Wrestling
The San Benito High wrestling squad opened the new season Thursday by falling to Christopher High in Gilroy.
The Balers led 36-12 with five matches to go, but San Benito was pinned four times to lose 39-36.
San Benito will travel to Half Moon Bay for a varsity tournament Friday.
Boys soccer
The soccer team lost a close 1-0 game to Christopher High at home Thursday, evening their season record to 1-1.
The game’s lone goal came in the first half from the Cougars’ David Anaya.
San Benito will travel to Oak Grove on Saturday for a tournament.
Girls Soccer
Two games, four overtime periods and two wins have started the Balers new season. For the second game in a row, San Benito went into overtime scoreless – but this time they never scored a goal.
Instead, the Balers beat Salinas High in the second game of the Watsonville tournament in a penalty shootout by a score of 4-2.
San Benito’s strong defense once again held their opponent scoreless by allowing all four shots during 90 minutes of play. The Baler offense meanwhile fired 18 shots on the Salinas net.
“My defense, that’s what is stopping everything,” head coach Ben Alvarez said. “The defense is playing great.”
San Benito will play Harbor in the tournament’s championship game Monday at 5:30 p.m.
Anzar basketball
Anzar opened the new season with a 69-22 loss to Woodside Priory in a non-league game Wednesday at the James Lick Tournament.
The Hawks were over matched from the beginning falling behind 27-4 after the first quarter. Anzar scored only 7 points in the entire first half.
Jesse Ramirez led the way for Anzar, scoring 12 points on four 3-point shots.
