At the CCS Top 8 track meet Saturday at San Jose City College, the Balers finished with five top-5 finishers, as Bellarmine and Los Gatos took home the team titles.
Behind a third-place finish in the high jump from Christopher Cook (6-00) and a fifth-place finish in the 110m hurdles from Brian Tobias (15.48), the boys track team took 15th place at the meet. The Balers recorded 10 points overall.
On the girls side, Vanessa Estrada’s third-place finish in the 1600 meters (4:59.72) and Breanna Lowther’s fifth-place finish in the discus (111-08.50) allowed the Balers to place 20th overall.
The Balers finish off their home season at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday against Salinas.
SBHS baseball
Behind a 3-for-5 day from Josh George, the San Benito baseball team held off Monte Vista Christian to earn a 10-9 victory on Friday. The win gives the Balers an 18-4 overall record. At 11-2 inside the Monterey Bay League, San Benito holds a one game lead over rival Palma.
On Friday, San Benito needed a six-run sixth inning to escape with the victory. After leading Monte Vista 4-0 through the game’s first four innings, the Mustangs struck for eight runs in the fifth to take control of the game.
The lead, though, didn’t last long. In the top of the sixth inning, the Balers regained the advantage and held on for the win.
George finished with two doubles and a triple. He recorded two RBIs in the win. Junior Rodriguez also added two RBIs, going 2-for-4 with a double. Robert Soto added one RBI and two hits as well.
On the mound, Soto threw four strong innings, allowing two runs and two hits. The Baler bullpen, though, ran into some trouble. Justin Goodwin allowed four runs (only two earned) without recording an out. Overall, six runs were scored off the Balers’ bullpen.
San Benito’s season continues at 4 p.m. Tuesday against North Salinas.
