The San Benito tennis team opened the season with three consecutive losses, including a 5-2 loss at the hands of Palma.

The Balers only victories came from No. 1 singles player Andrew Panger (6-0, 6-2) over the Chieftains’ Mitchell Huntington. No. 4 singles player Nick Trillo improved to 3-0 so far this year with a 7-6, 6-2 win.

The rest of the Balers couldn’t keep pace. No. 2 singles player Sunny Singh lost 6-2, 6-2. No. 3 singles player Aaron Francis also fell by the score of 6-2, 6-2.

No. 2 doubles pair Michael Ormsby and Rafa Alfaro lost 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. Abed Dadu and Jordan Kortsen also lost in three games (6-2, 4-6, 7-6).

The Balers opened the season with losses to Sobrato (2-5) and Alvarez (3-4).

SBHS baseball

After losing the opening game of the Wilcox Mike Hazlett tournament in San Jose, the San Benito baseball team rallied to close with wins over Santa Cruz and Homestead.

Thursday’s 4-1 win over Santa Cruz was an important step for the Balers after losing to Mitty earlier in the week. In the game Brandon Granger started and threw five innings, allowing one run and striking out four.

San Benito added eight hits in the victory. Josh George finished 2-for-3 with an run scored. Cody Freitas also went 2-for-3 for the Balers. Dylan Yamasaki added a double while going 2-for-3. Zachry Moeller drove in the Balers only RBI with a double.

San Benito took the early lead in the first inning and held on from there. Santa Cruz could only get on the board in the second inning.

Against Homestead, the Balers jumped out to another early lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Balers then added four more runs in the final four innings to build a 6-1 lead.

Jacob Tonascia finished with 3-for-3 with two doubles and one walk. Josh George went 2-for-4 with one RBI and Matt Hawk finished 2-for-3 with one double.

Jacob Trujillo earned threw in after throwing two innings. He allowed one walk and struck out one.

The Balers travel to Monte Vista Christian at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

SBHS volleyball

The Balers opened the 2013 season with a 3-1 victory over Palma on Thursday.

San Benito travels to Alisal at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
