Jessica Rux finished 11th overall in the 21st Annual Mission 5K Run held in San Juan Bautista on Saturday.
Although the Hollister resident is only 12 years old, Jessica passed many of the more experienced runners to finish as the top female with a time of 18:20 in the 3.1-mile event.
“If she gets serious about racing, she’ll break the five-minute mark,” said Jessica’s father Tom, who has helped train her. “She ran this race without even being serious about running. It’s just been fly-by-night training so far.”
Last year, Jessica finished with a time of 20.11 and came in at 19.47 the year before.
Tom was watching the race from the half-mile mark with his binoculars out, waiting for the racers to come by.
“There was a pack nine of all the local high school runners coming around the corner,” Tom said. “All of a sudden I see this kid coming around just 50 meters behind. I do a double take. And sure enough, it was Jessica. I looked at my clock, and she was running way to fast.”
He followed his daughter from there on his scooter to track her progress.
“I wanted her to get out to a quick start and set the pace from there. She found her pace,” Tom said.
