Cowboys score twice in opening minutes of second half, hold on
for 2-1 win over ‘Balers
Hollister – Two quick scores to open the second half was just enough for Salinas Tuesday, as the visiting Cowboys defeated the San Benito boys soccer team 2-1 in Hollister.

The Haybalers fall to 2-4 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 4-5-2 overall.

“Same story,” coach Ben Alvarez said. “We dominated the game again.

“I’m not too upset about the loss, because the boys are playing good ball – good communicating, good passing. We just can’t find the back of the net. Either that, or the goalies are too good.”

After a scoreless first half, the Cowboys got on the scoreboard with goals in the 43rd and 45th minutes, both of which came from the right side.

In the 75th minute, the fourth time was apparently the charm for the ‘Balers. Josh Flores, Noe Magana and Eric DeLeon all took shots on net, but all were blocked. Gilbert Lizarraga’s attempt, however, found the back of the net on the fourth try, and cut the deficit in half.

But that’s as close as San Benito would come as time ran out.

“It’s not for a lack of trying,” Alvarez said. “We’re continually pressuring – taking shots, taking shots … They’re playing good ball. We’ll find the back of the net more consistently as we go along.”

One of San Benito’s two league wins came on the road at Palma. On Thursday, the ‘Balers will host the Chieftains under the lights at Andy Hardin Stadium. Kick-off is at 6 p.m.
