San Benito Babe Ruth had Opening Night last Friday at Veterans Memorial Park in Hollister, and the defending champion Athletics picked up where it left off, defeating the White Sox 11-3 to open the 53rd season of the league.
Two Senior Babe Ruth teams (16-18-years-old) provided the night cap, as the Expos topped Team Hollister 8-3, with starting pitching Anthony Alvarez hurling a complete game with 12 strikeouts.
Two games followed on Saturday, when the Cardinals upended the Giants 5-2 and the Rockies downed the Tigers 9-2, while four more games were played on Sunday. The Athletics defeated the Cardinals 8-6, the Tigers beat the Giants 11-1, the Rockies edged the White Sox 5-3, while Team Hollister avenged its loss to the Expos with a 9-4 victory behing home runs from Adrian Diaz and Trevor Gessell.
San Benito Babe Ruth recently concluded a successful Spring League season, and Friday’s festivities kicked off the Summer League portion of the season.
Back for the second season are the Senior Babe Ruth 16- to 18-year-old players. Last year’s All-Star team went 2-2 in the state tournament, losing to eventual World Series runner-up Modesto.
Last year, San Benito Babe Ruth All-Stars had a clean sweep of the Central California District 1 All-Star Tournaments. The 13- and 15-year-old All-Star teams won district and eventually lost in the state tournament, while the 14-year-old All-Stars won the district and the state tournament, before eventually losing in the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament.
This year, San Benito Babe Ruth has been given the honor to host two separate District 1 All-star tournaments. The league will play host to the 13-year-old All-Stars beginning on Thursday, July 2, as well as the 15-year-old All-Stars on Saturday, July 11.
