Editor,
Today’s guest editorial discusses the differences between Napa and San Benito counties. Here is my nickel’s worth.
We have never managed to score a reservation at the French Laundry, but have eaten at Toque, as well as a few second tier Napa restaurants including Bouche and Mustard’s.
When we moved back to Hollister, we printed a long list of local restaurants. Between unpacking and kitchen remodeling, we have eaten at the majority of them. While some have been pleasant enough, nothing in Hollister or San Juan begins to compare to even the second tier spots in Napa. The one place that qualified when we left 13 years ago has become quite ordinary.
The tri-tip sandwich at Dunneville is consistently outstanding, with an occasional bit of gristle. And the Reuben in the bar at Ridgemark was surprisingly good the one time I tried it. But if I wanted an exceptional meal, I would return to La Foret, at the south end of the Almaden valley, or head for Monterey. I wish it were otherwise.
