San Benito County’s unemployment rate increased eclipsed 20 percent in January, according to the most recent data released Friday by the state.
San Benito County’s jobless rate of 20.6 percent was an increase over the December number, 19.4 percent, according to the figures that are not seasonally adjusted.
There were an estimated 5,500 people filing jobless claims in San Benito County during the month, according to the data compiled in the federal survey. The total workforce is 26,900 here.
Statewide, the jobless rate fell from 12.5 percent in December to 12.3 percent in January, according to the figures. Nationwide, the unemployment rate was 9 percent.
San Benito County in January had the seventh-highest jobless rate in California. The highest was 27.8 percent in Colusa County.
Nearby counties included Monterey at 17 percent, Santa Cruz at 14.8 percent and Santa Clara at 10.5 percent, according to the EDD.
