Vikings pocket late score, finish in 2-2 with Lady ‘Balers on
Friday
HOLLISTER
Just a pair of mental mistakes. Sometimes that’s all it takes.
San Benito’s Hannah Cobb scored her 15th goal of the season, but a late goal from North Salinas in the 75th minute proved to be the equalizer as the visiting Vikings escaped Hollister with a 2-2 tie on Friday.
“It was a heartbreaker, this game,” San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez said. “We were clearly a very dominant team today. We played perfectly.
“I was a disappointed with the outcome of the game, but that’s the way it goes, I guess.”
San Benito, which has still yet to lose in the Tri-County Athletic League, is now 1-0-2, while North Salinas improves to 0-3-1.
After a scoreless first half, the Vikings got on the scoreboard first in the 45th minute, but San Benito immediately responded when Taryn Lester tied the game at 1-all in the 50th minute off an assist from Cobb.
Less than 20 minutes later, Cobb recorded her 15th score of the season as well as the go-ahead goal off an assist from Daniela Ocampo in the 67th minute.
But the Vikings never gave up and tied the game at 2 in the waning minutes of regulation.
Alvarez said both goals scored by North Salinas came after “mental mistakes” by his team.
And to perhaps rub it in even more, the Lady ‘Balers scored what would have been the game-winner in the final minute of play when Sophie Coelho found the back of the net.
Referees, however, called offsides on the play.
“It was clearly not offsides,” Alvarez said. “We scored the goal but it was not valid.
“It’s tough to argue with the refs sometimes.”
San Benito is off until Wednesday when they will travel to Salinas to play Everett Alvarez. Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m.
