Pebble Beach – San Benito Haybaler Kyle Reuther held a block party at Robert Louis Stevenson on Wednesday.

The keeper for the ‘Balers water polo team made more saves than his team had goals, as the goalie had 17 blocks and led San Benito to a 14-3 league victory.

“He was an absolute wall; just nothing was going in,” coach Tom Agan said. “He’s been doing a great job and he just stepped it up another level today.

“They probably took a few too many shots, but we weren’t giving them great shots, and Kyle did a great job in goal.”

With the resounding win over RLS, the ‘Balers not only quickly rebounded from Monday’s tough overtime loss to Carmel, but improved to 3-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League, and 6-9 overall.

“It’s kind of nice to have one go that way,” Agan said of the win. “I truly believe we’re a second-place team in our league even though we lost to Carmel on Monday, and we’ll prove that at the league finals.”

Jordan Schafer scored seven goals to lead the ‘Balers at RLS, while Adam Rianda and Robert Marks found the net two times each.

“I’m proud of him,” Agan said of Marks. “He did a really good job today.”

Phil Torres, Matt McCullough, Ryan Whiteside and Thomas Parcell each added a goal to push San Benito to 14 goals on the day.

Along with his goal, Parcell also provided stellar defense for San Benito.

“He had a great game and was really solid on defense,” Agan said. “A lot of the counterattacks we generated were when Thomas (Parcell) forced a bad pass – pressure defense and force an error.”

Agan is pleased with his team’s play, and said his players are hustling and driving on offense, and the passing has definitely improved.

The ‘Balers will have some time off before their next match, which won’t be until Oct. 12-13 when they’ll compete in the 16-team Live Oak Tournament.

Teams are guaranteed three games, and San Benito will look to do their best against Clovis, Saint Ignatius, Valley Christian, Leland, Serra, Salinas, Archbishop Mitty, Rio Americano (Sacramento), Live Oak, Pioneer, Willow Glen, Santa Cruz, Sunnyside, Carmel and Lemoore.

The team will return to league play on Oct. 16 at Palma.

Said Agan, “We just need to try and keep improving and try to raise our level.”
