Lady ‘Balers beat host Alisal 7-0 on the tennis court
SALINAS

Less than a week after defeating Notre Dame 7-0, in a match that was actually so close it could have gone either way, the San Benito girls tennis team returned to the court Tuesday and posted a similar result against host Alisal, easily defeating the Salinas school, 7-0.

The seven matches weren’t nearly as close as compared to last week’s Notre Dame match, however, with only one match, the No. 1 doubles, involving a tie-breaker.

Crystal Perreira and Marisa Ibarra defeated Nicole Saldana and Geneviene Urueta 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4) in the closely contested match, though, and it was all San Benito from there.

Vanessa Casalegno and Chelsea Yoakum beat Amanda Salazar and Cynthia Rodriguez 6-0, 6-2, while No. 3 doubles Rachel Smith and Lauren Ademek won 6-0, 6-1 over Jennifer Camacho and Mayra Juarez.

In singles, Lady ‘Baler Amanda Marshall defeated Mitzi Ambriz 6-0, 6-0, and Abbie Woods beat Rachel Morena 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3, Hayley Barker won 6-4, 6-2 over Emma Civetta, while Kristina Slavich defeated Jermine Rabanal 6-4, 6-1.

San Benito improves to 2-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 8-1 overall.

Looking to see how his Lady ‘Balers stack up to the best competition, Coach Ed Cecena is eyeing next Monday’s meet at Santa Cruz as a true test for his team.

“That’s a good team,” he said. “That will give us a good indication of where we are at and whether or not we’ll compete with Salinas.”

The Lady ‘Balers will play their next match on Thursday when they host North Salinas at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister at 4 p.m.
