The San Benito baseball team split its two games Saturday in the
Mike Hazlett Tournament hosted by Wilcox, beating Harbor 13-5 and
falling to Valley Christian 5-0 in a morning-afternoon doubleheader
at Valley Christian High.

The Haybalers took advantage of seven Harbor errors and pounded out 13 hits and drew four walks to coast in the opener against the Pirates.

Zach Canez allowed five runs (four earned) and eight hits over four innings to earn the win. Nathan Hopkins pitched the final three innings and allowed no runs and two hits, while striking out five.

San Benito staked itself to a 3-1 lead after the first inning, but Harbor rallied in the second, and it was tied 4-4 after two.

The ‘Balers took control in the middle innings, scoring two runs each in the fourth and fifth. They added a run in the sixth and four more in the seventh to blow it open.

Brian Haggett had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, including hitting San Benito’s first home run of the season.

Justin Andrade was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Canez was also 2-for-4, driving in and scoring a pair of runs and hitting a double.

In the afternoon contest against powerhouse Valley Christian, the ‘Balers were limited to three hits and fell to the Warriors despite a solid outing.

Michael Garcia pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and two runs, with one being unearned. Steve Cabral pitched the next 1 1/3 innings and gave up three runs (one earned) on one hit as walks and errors plagued San Benito.

The ‘Balers continue tournament Group A play Wednesday, facing host Wilcox at 7:30pm.
