There wasn't room for the Baler offense and quarterback Kyle Vallejo to get going Friday night against Oak Grove, who held San Benito scoreless and only allowed three first downs the entire game.

Baler football

Up against perhaps the best team they’ll see this season, and most certainly the strongest opponent of the preseason, the San Benito Haybalers were delivered a 43-0 drubbing at the hands of the defending Central Coast Section Open Division champion Oak Grove Eagles in San Jose last Friday.

Led by Omari Carr, who sprinted for 177 yards and two touchdowns on just 16 carries, the Eagles pushed and shoved their way to 308 yards on the ground and held the Balers to 97 yards of total offense.

San Benito finishes the preseason at 2-2, and will visit Alisal Friday to open the Tri-County Athletic League season.

With San Benito’s offense committing two turnovers and held to just 32 plays from scrimmage – compared to Oak Grove’s 57 – the Baler defense found themselves on the field for the majority of the game, and the Eagles took advantage.

Girls’ volleyball

The San Benito girls volleyball team took care of host Everett Alvarez Tuesday in three games (25-18, 25-13, 25-7) to remain undefeated in the Tri-County Athletic League at 3-0.

A match removed from their 91-dig output against North Salinas last Thursday, in which the Lady Balers took three games from the visiting Vikings (25-21, 25-23, 25-17), San Benito once again digged their fair share of balls on Tuesday, with five players combining for 63 digs.

Girls’ tennis

Last Thursday, the San Benito girls tennis team beat North Salinas 7-0, in what was their third straight 7-0 victory.

After dropping a non-league match to Santa Cruz, 5-2, the Lady Balers returned this week to defeat Everett Alvarez on Tuesday, 5-2, to improve to 4-0 in the TCAL, 10-2 overall.

Girls’ water polo

After San Benito entered a pair of teams at last weekend’s Carmel Invitational, each of which finished in second place in their respective brackets, the Lady Balers returned to non-tournament play and trumped a visiting Lincoln squad 14-4 Monday in Hollister.

The Lady Balers are now 7-5 overall.

Boys’ water polo

The San Benito boys water polo team was dealt a trio of difficult opponents last weekend at the St. Francis Invitational, and went 0-3 at the tournament.

After losing 18-10 to Los Altos, recently ranked No. 5 by the San Jose Mercury News, the Haybalers (3-6) dropped a 17-9 match to Archbishop Mitty and a 12-4 decision to Gunn.

Cross country

The San Benito Haybalers and the Salinas Cowboys split their cross country dual on Monday at Toro Park, as the Lady Balers won 21-36, while the Baler boys lost 23-35.

Frankie Rivera and Adrian Rodriuez finished second and third overall with times of 16:43 and 16:54, respectively.

Courtney Allen led the Lady Balers with a 19:39 to help defeat the Cowboys on Monday, as teammates Rachel Shimabukuro (20:40) and Ana Rosa Duarte (20:57) finished in third and fourth place, respectively.

San Benito is off until Oct. 11 when they’ll compete at the Pacific Grove Invitational.
