Ellis to play U.S. Open
Local professional golfer John Ellis will be playing in this
year’s U.S. Open, which will be held June 12-15 at Torrey Pines
Golf Course in San Diego.
Ellis gained entry to the U.S. Open by shooting a 4-under-par
140 over two rounds Monday at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly
City.
A graduate of Live Oak High School and Gavilan College before
attending the University of Oregon, Ellis has seen his play improve
dramatically in the last year.
Ellis to play U.S. Open

Ellis gained entry to the U.S. Open by shooting a 4-under-par 140 over two rounds Monday at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City.
A graduate of Live Oak High School and Gavilan College before attending the University of Oregon, Ellis has seen his play improve dramatically in the last year.
Ellis recently won back-to-back events on the Canadian Tour, including wins at the Stockton Sports Commission Classic on April 20 and the Corona Mazatlan PGA Championship on May 4.
San Benito’s Shorey ninth at state track meet
San Benito junior Ryan Shorey ran a 50.44 in the 400-meter preliminaries at the CIF State Track and Field Championships last Friday and finished ninth in his heat, 22nd out of 27 runners overall.
Shorey, though, said he was pleased to experience the big-time track meet, especially with another chance next year to qualify.
“I’ve been there once. I know how it works. I won’t have to worry much next year,” Shorey said. “It takes off a lot of pressure because I know what’s coming.”
Shorey’s junior standing perhaps sets him up nicely next year. He was one of only two juniors listed in the 400 meters at state, while eight of the nine who advanced to the state finals on Saturday were seniors.
“I was happy to find that among the juniors who qualified for state, I had the fastest time,” Shorey said.
Shorey will compete this Saturday unattached at the Adidas Golden West Invitational at Folsom High School.
The personal-best time of 49.39 that he recorded at the Central Coast Section Championships on May 23 qualified Shorey for the event in Folsom.
Boyd competes at 2008 West Regional NCAAs
Former Lady Baler and Northern Arizona University sophomore Amanda Boyd ran a 17:27.89 in the 5,000 meters at the 2008 West Regional NCAA Track and Field Championships at Cal State Northridge last Friday.
The time placed Boyd in 22nd place.
Previously, the 2006 SBHS graduate clocked a 16:45.57 at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut in April, and an 18:03.43 at the 2008 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento in May.
Barone off to strong start
Former Haybaler Daniel Barone was activated from Triple-A Albuquerque’s disabled list last month and sent to Double-A Carolina, where he has since thrown 12 innings and allowed just two runs on nine hits.
For Carolina, Barone is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA. He’s allowed five walks, struck out four, and is limiting opponents to a .209 batting average.
The Hollister resident started last season with Double-A Carolina before moving up to Triple-A, where he went 7-0 for the Albuquerque Isotopes.
Barone was called up on Aug. 8. and started for the Florida Marlins on Aug. 10 when they played the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.
Barone earned two wins for the Marlins in spring training this year, but was limited to just two starts with Albuquerque due to injuries.
Central Coast edges San Jose in NCAFF playoffs
The Central Coast Barnstormers were admittedly looking past their first-round playoff opponent last Saturday, as they narrowly defeated the visiting San Jose Predators 14-13 at Gilroy’s Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.
The Barnstormers will now look to avenge a loss from earlier this season when they play the Salinas Spartans at Burrell Field in San Leandro on Saturday night.
“This is what we wanted it to come down to,” Barnstormers head coach Greg Garcia said. “We’ve been thinking about that loss to them all season. It really stuck with us. It was hard not to think about playing them again. I was actually looking at film of them last week.”
Central Coast loses to Salinas 28-21
The North Division Championship between the Northern Valley Lions and the Stockton Trojans will kick off at 3 p.m., Saturday. The South Division Championship between the Barnstormers and Spartans will follow one hour after the completion of the North championship.
