If the game had ended in a scoreless tie, a score that was true
for the first 72 minutes of play on Tuesday, the San Benito High
boys soccer team may have felt better off.
But after taking the lead with just eight minutes left in the
contest, only to see visiting Everett Alvarez tie it at 1-all in
the 79th minute, well, that was a little bit harder to swallow.

The Eagles, to their credit, took 12 more shots on net than the
Haybalers did in the 1-1 game.
But Luis Gonzalez’ rocket into the top right corner put San
Benito up late, and supplied the team with a sense of hope after
the Eagles controlled much of the match.
Just seven minutes later, though, Alvarez’ Diego Ambriz tied it
off a free kick inside the Haybaler box in the final minute of
regulation.
Last week, led by a pair of goals from Alejandro Castillo, San
Benito earned their first victory in Tri-County Athletic League
play when it defeated North Salinas 2-0.

Boys’ basketball
Despite an eight-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, the San Benito High boys’ basketball team lost to host North Salinas 53-52 Tuesday in Tri-County Athletic League play.
The Balers were outscored 19-8 in the final period after costly turnovers and a 1 of 6 free-throw performance allowed the Vikings to mount a comeback.
Eric Elayda led San Benito with 14 points.
Girls’ basketball
Vanessa Farias scored 23 points, Megan Halstead added 14 and the San Benito Lady Balers dropped the defensive hammer and continued their hot play with a triumphant 55-44 victory over North Salinas Monday night at Hollister’s Mattson Gym.
It was San Benito’s eighth straight win, and as far as the TCAL goes, their biggest victory of the year.
“It’s a big win, but we still have 10 obstacles in front of us for that TCAL crown,” said Farias, whose 23 points included a 10 of 13 showing at the free-throw line. “I’m glad we got it over, because it was one of the bigger obstacles. But we still have 10 more to go.”
In what turned out to be a back-and-forth slugfest early on, with 10 lead changes through just a quarter and a half of play, the Lady Balers grabbed hold of a 26-25 edge with 35 seconds remaining in the second quarter after Jennifer Guerrero sunk a pair of free throws.
From there, San Benito never looked back.
Slowing the pace considerably in the fourth quarter, the Lady Balers stayed ahead until the end behind 23 of 36 shooting from the free-throw line, and 11 of 15 in the final period.
“But the way we finished was what I was most proud of,” San Benito head coach David Kaplansky said. “I thought that fourth quarter really showed our true character.
“Our kids kept attacking and eventually we were able to play our game.”
Girls’ soccer
The San Benito High girls’ soccer team split two games last week when it defeated Alisal 3-0 and tied North Salinas 2-2.
“It was a heartbreaker, this game,” San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez said of the North Salinas match. “We were clearly a very dominant team today. We played perfectly.
“I was disappointed with the outcome of the game, but that’s the way it goes, I guess.”
Taryn Lester and Hannah Cobb provided the goals against the Vikings, while Sophie Coelho, Cobb and Christiana Perez pocketed the three scores at Alisal.
Wrestling
In their final tune-up tournament prior to opening the Tri-County Athletic League on Wednesday, the San Benito High wrestling team delivered with four individual champions and edged league rival Palma for first place at the first annual Apple Cider Classic in Watsonville last weekend.
Junior Davila at 119 pounds, Steven Borba at 140, Josh Ramirez at 152 and Enrique Lucatero at 160 all earned individual championships at their respective weights, and paced the Haybalers to 246.5 points. Palma finished runner-up with 217 points.
As an added bonus, Davila and Lucatero were respectively named the outstanding lower weight and upper weight wrestlers of the tournament.
