Balers take Toreadors
The San Benito boys volleyball team proved their tournament
victory over Monterey earlier this month was no fluke on Tuesday
night, when the Haybalers swept past the Toreadors in three games
(27-25, 25-19, 25-17).
Adrian Rodriguez had 30 assists, Danny Ruiz and Luis Bradley
contributed 14 and 13 digs, respectively, and seven different
Balers chimed in for a combined 32 kills in the victory, which
improves San Benito to 3-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 10-5
overall.
The team’s match against Gilroy on Thursday took place after The
Pinnacle’s press time.
Erik Rodriguez was the kill leader on Tuesday with nine, while
Brian Hawks, Jakob Rice and Luis Bradley each had six kills
apiece.
The win follows a 2-2 performance at the Hammer and Roofing
Seminar tournament in Willow Glen last weekend, where San Benito
defeated American of Fremont and Harbor High by 2-0 margins, but
lost to Los Gatos (0-2) and Valley Christian (1-2) to finish the
16-team tournament.

SBHS Baseball

The San Benito High baseball team improved to 4-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League Tuesday when they squeaked by host Salinas 5-4.

The win followed a more-than-comfortable victory over visiting Aptos last Saturday, when the Balers connected on nine hits and took advantage of 11 free bases in a convincing 17-1 win against the Mariners.

San Benito scored 14 runs in the first inning alone, all with two outs. With Trevor Fabing on second base in the opening inning, Aptos then walked the next four batters before Spencer Brann hit a two-run single. Another walk to Kyle Vallejo then set up three straight hits – a two-run single from Mark Hurley, an RBI single from Fabing and another RBI single from Kyle Zozaya.

The inning continued when Steve Cabral walked and Ramiro Chapa was hit by a pitch. Darin Gillies then lined a two-run double down the left-field line, and Isaak Ramos cleared the bases with a three-run homer.

The Balers (9-3-1 overall) will host Salinas today, Friday, at 4 p.m.

SBHS Swimming and Diving

Aside from the “freezing cold” temperatures at Hartnell College, the San Benito High swimming and diving team remained hot in the pool last Friday when it easily defeated rival Salinas in both the boys and girls divisions.

The Baler boys, behind the swimming prowess of Brandon Drogemuller, cruised to a 111-61 victory. The Lady Balers, meanwhile, which were anchored by Shelli Reed, nearly equaled the boys’ 50-point differential, beating Salinas 114-71.

Drogemuller clocked a 4:57.56 in the 500 free and Reed recorded a 2:17.89 in the 200 IM, each time good enough for a place at the CCS Prelims.

San Benito will host Alisal Friday for swimming at 3:30 p.m., in Hollister.

SBHS Track and Field

San Benito High girls track and field finished first out of 24 teams last weekend at the West Valley Relays in Campbell, edging runner-up Aptos by a 61.5-60 margin.

Courtney Allen led the Lady Balers with a second-place finish in the 1,500 meters (4:52.77) and a third-place finish in the 3,000 meters (10:55.30).

The Baler boys, meanwhile, compiled 32 points to take ninth. Evan McFadden ran to a fifth-place finish in the 110 hurdles (16.30) and Jose Castillo was fifth in the 5,000 meters (17:08.92).

Evergreen Valley finished first with 65 points.

San Benito’s scheduled league meet at Everett Alvarez on Thursday took place after The Pinnacle’s press time.

SBHS Softball

The San Benito High softball team opened Tri-County Athletic League play Tuesday with a 3-1 victory at Salinas.

The Lady Balers are now 1-0 in the TCAL. The team’s scheduled game against Everett Alvarez Thursday at home took place after The Pinnacle’s press time.

SBHS Boys Golf

After taking runner-up to Palma in every single Tri-County Athletic League Tournament last season, and in two tournaments already this season, the Haybalers finally broke through last Thursday at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister, where they tied the Chieftains for first place with a 185.

It was the lowest score compiled by San Benito this season, and nine strokes better than the team’s lowest score (194) last season.

Haybaler Marcus Synegal medaled the par-36 front nine of the Gabilan Course with a 2-under 34 on Thursday, leading San Benito. Teammate Will Cross carded a 1-under 35.

San Benito’s Nathan Winn shot a 36 for par on Thursday, while Joey Amaral delivered a strong score of 38 for the Balers. Derell Aton and Blake Stephens rounded out San Benito with matching 42’s.

SBHS Boys Tennis

The Haybalers had won four straight matches since the previous time they played Salinas, including a 5-2 triumph over visiting Palma last Thursday at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister.

Last season, San Benito lost twice to the Chieftains, both times by 6-1 margins.

However, San Benito fell to Salinas 5-2 Tuesday, ending the team’s four-match winning streak dating back to Feb. 26.
