San Benito wrestling

Despite not having a single champion, the San Benito wrestling team still walked away with a sixth-place finish among 67 teams at Mid Cals last weekend, third among CCS teams, and had four placers of the 12 wrestlers who competed.

The Balers’ 154.5 points placed them ahead of Kingsburg (144.0), Spanish Springs (140.5) and Monterey (134.0), among others at Mid Cals, while Selma, the third-ranked team in the state of California, snapped host Gilroy’s three-year reign at the tournament when it compiled 261.5 points to earn the Mid Cal crown.

Josh Ramirez was the lone finalist for San Benito. Wrestling at 147 pounds, down from his usual 152 pounds, Ramirez went all the way to championship before losing to San Lorenzo Valley’s Cody Rodebaugh.

Teammates Enrique Lucatero (3rd at 162 pounds), Geo Coelho (8th at 137 pounds) and Steven Borba (8th at 142 pounds) all placed as well at the prestigious tournament.

The San Benito High girls’ soccer team suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season on Monday when they lost 1-0 to Notre Dame at Cal State University Monterey Bay in Seaside.

Coupled with last week’s 3-0 loss at Gilroy, the Balers currently sit at 3-2-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 11-3-3 overall.

“We’ve had two games that we were unable to capitalize on,” San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez said. “We’ve got to get back into things here, back to the practice field and work on finishing.”

It was also the second narrow defeat in a row for San Benito. Just last week, the Balers lost to Gilroy 4-3 after the Mustangs scored the go-ahead goal with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

San Benito tied the game at 1-all early in the second half when Brian Cruz deposited a score off a penalty kick in the 46th minute.

Baler keeper Christian Maravilla had seven saves on Monday.
