San Benito's Eric Elayda goes for a loose ball during a Jan. 15 game against Gilroy.

Haybaler soccer
The San Benito Haybalers jumped out to a 2-0 lead Tuesday after
Alex Castillo connected on a right cross from Efrain Espinoza in
the 10th minute and Alejandro Salvatier pocketed a goal from 18
yards out in the 20th minute. But the lead was short-lived, as the
visiting Mustangs deposited three unanswered goals on their way to
a 4-3 victory.

It was like the (Everett) Alvarez game,

San Benito head coach Ramiro Ramos said of the Haybalers’ 1-1
tie with the Salinas school last week.

We had the game in our pocket.

But we lost it on free kicks and that’s a weakness. When the
ball is in the air, we can’t win it. The guys are having trouble
when the ball is in the air.

Gilroy, which scored three goals in the 25th, 30th and 35th
minutes to finish the first half, scored two of those goals on free
kicks and another on a corner kick.
San Benito is now 1-4-1 in the TCAL. It suffered a 1-0 loss to
Salinas last Thursday.
The Balers will play host to Palma on Monday at 3:30 p.m.

San Benito High wrestling

The shorthanded San Benito High wrestling team picked up a pair of wins over Alisal (45-23) and Everett Alvarez (33-6) on Tuesday night in Hollister, easily cruising past the two league opponents with all eyes on this weekend’s Mid Cals in Gilroy.

However, after last weekend’s William C. Overfelt Wrestling Classic in San Jose, the Haybalers will be heading to Mid Cals missing key parts.

San Benito lost David Bazan (112), Junior Davila (119) and Morris Stevens (125) to injuries on Saturday at the Overfelt tournament, where the Haybalers finished sixth, nonetheless.

Not one of the three wrestlers is expected to compete this weekend in Gilroy, however. Davila suffered a hand injury at Overfelt, Stevens separated his shoulder, while Bazan was left groggy after being slammed to the mat.

Head coach Brian DeCarli pulled him from the rest of Saturday’s tournament as a precautionary measure.

Josh Ramirez provided San Benito with a positive performance at Overfelt, though, as the 152-pounder was named outstanding middleweight wrestler after he won his weight division.

Enrique Lucatero placed as well, finishing in third at 160 pounds.

San Benito High girls’ soccer

With sole possession of second place in the Tri-County Athletic League on the line Friday, the Lady Balers deposited four goals in the second half, including three in a 15-minute period, and ran away with a big 5-2 victory over visiting Salinas.

San Benito has scored 10 goals in its last two games, including Wednesday’s 5-1 win over Everett Alvarez, and haven’t lost a game in their last seven contests dating back to Dec. 1.

Perhaps more importantly, San Benito (3-0-2 TCAL, 11-1-3) put five goals up on the scoreboard against a team in Salinas that has not allowed more than three goals in any one game this season.

The Lady Balers squared off at Gilroy on Wednesday, although that game took place after The Pinnacle’s press time.

San Benito High girls’ basketball

The Tri-County Athletic League’s reigning Most Valuable Player showed her worth by scoring eight points in the final period against Gilroy en route to a game-high 23 points and a 56-41 San Benito Lady Balers victory on Friday night.

Vanessa Farias dominated from nearly all spots on the floor, picking off passes, driving through the lane for lay-ups and canning five 3-pointers from the perimeter. Leading 17-9 after the first quarter and 30-18 at halftime, the Lady Balers left little chance for a Gilroy comeback by going up by as many as 21 points and never leading by less than 10 in the second half.

San Benito hosted Notre Dame Wednesday, although that game took place after The Pinnacle’s press time.

San Benito High boys’ basketball

Trailing by just four points at halftime to host Palma Tuesday, San Benito couldn’t keep up with the Chieftains’ offense and were outscored 41-18 in the second half en route to a 65-38 loss in Tri-County Athletic League play.

San Benito falls to 0-4 in the TCAL after a 44-43 defeat against Gilroy last Thursday. Dominic Zanella had 10 points in that game, but the Mustangs, which only led for two minutes through the entire contest, mounted a nine-point comeback in the fourth quarter to steal the one-point victory.

San Benito’s game at Alisal Thursday took place after The Pinnacle’s press time.
