HOLLISTER – The San Benito girls’ tennis team was able to take advantage of a small Seaside squad Tuesday, as they earned their third win of the season over the visiting Spartans at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.

No. 3 singles player Kristina Slavic won in straight sets over Meriam Kanaka, 6-0, 6-0, while No. 4 singles player Danielle Dube defeated Michelle Ho 6-3, 6-1.

San Benito’s top two singles players, No. 1 Amanda Marshall and No. 2 Abbie Woods, marched past Corina Reyes and Keri Moon 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0, respectively.

In doubles, the lone match also went in San Benito’s favor, as Jessica Vest and Erin Glasspool teamed up to beat Marie Jarman and Mariah Rivo 6-0, 6-0.

San Benito (3-0) hosted Live Oak Thursday at Ridgemark, although that match was after The Pinnacle’s press time. The Lady Balers are slated to visit Aptos Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Harbor holds off Lady Balers

SANTA CRUZ – The San Benito girls volleyball team fell to Harbor High in three games (25-14, 25-20, 25-21) Tuesday night in Santa Cruz, but head coach Dean Askanas, who knows his young team will take its lumps in the preseason, saw plenty of positives.

The head coach, though, is looking for a quick turnaround this weekend.

“I was really pleased with the way they played. Harbor is a pretty good team,” Askanas said. “There were a lot of good things and a lot of things we can improve upon.”

The coach highlighted the play of senior Chelsea Freitas (12 digs), as well as team captains Justine Hunter (14 digs), Shayna Nakata (18 digs) and Sam Klauer (six digs).

The Lady Balers will open the 13-team Notre Dame-Salinas volleyball tournament with Carmel at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

“I don’t want us to take moral victories,” Askanas said. “But I see that we’re playing very hard and we have the potential to win, and I expect to start seeing wins on Saturday.”

Baler golf pair nab first at JGANC

HAYWARD – San Benito golfers Justin Palmquist and Derell Aton survived a putt-off at the Junior Advisors Team Shoot Out at Hayward’s Skywest Golf Course earlier this month when the pair sat tied after 18 holes with a 2-under 70.

Palmquist and Aton were neck-and-neck with Mountain View’s Charlie Welch and Corey Robello at the alternate-shot tournament. After each team carded matching 70s, and a first putt-off resulted in each player two-putting multiple times, tournament officials implemented one final tiebreaker to decide the champion.

First place would come down to a 30-foot putt, and whoever was closest to the pin would win. After the Mountain View pair’s shot wound up within three feet of the hole, Palmquist followed with a putt that placed the ball within two feet.

The Baler duo topped some 25 other teams competing at the event, and took home a pair of medals and a dozen Titleist Pro V1 golf balls.
