Football team takes a loss
After opening the season with a 2-1 record, with wins over
Lincoln and Wilcox, the San Benito football team has lost two
straight games with their latest defeat coming by a 14-6 margin to
the Alisal Trojans last Friday night in the Tri-County Athletic
League opener in Salinas.
The loss not only puts San Benito at 2-3 overall, 0-1 in the
TCAL, but puts an added importance on each of the five remaining
games on the Balers schedule.

The loss not only puts San Benito at 2-3 overall, 0-1 in the TCAL, but puts an added importance on each of the five remaining games on the Balers schedule.
The Balers have scored 46 points through five games this season, and their offensive woes continued in Salinas Friday. Although they out-gained the Trojans 263-200 in total offensive yards, San Benito committed four turnovers, three in the red zone, and were forced to battle the clock late in the game.
Quarterback Kyle Vallejo threw for 138 yards on 12 of 28 passing and hooked up with receiver Evan McFadden on nine balls for 116 yards.
San Benito hosts Everett Alvarez tonight, Friday, at 7:30 p.m., at Andy Hardin Stadium.
San Benito Girl’s tennis
The Salinas Cowboys flexed their muscle on the court last Thursday when they defeated the San Benito Lady Balers 5-2 at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club, and took Round 1 in a match that is expected to have heavy implications in the Tri-County Athletic League.
“Singles, 1 through 3, they’re really strong,” coach Ed Cecena said. “We did get a win from Bri (Ahumada-Wolfsmith) at No. 4, but they’re deep just like us. They just happened to be better than us today.”
San Benito girl’s volleyball
Despite digging out a combined 124 digs, the San Benito girls’ volleyball team lost in five games (30-32, 25-20, 25-23, 12-25, 7-15) to Salinas last Thursday at Mattson Gym in Hollister, falling for the first time this season in the Tri-County Athletic League.
San Benito’s defense was noteworthy as well, as libero Sara Yamasaki had a team-high 34 digs. She wasn’t the only one, though, as Sam Klauer contributed 27 digs and Shayna Nakata had 23 digs.
Setter Justine Hunter finished with 39 assists and 24 digs, while outside Courtney Scarlett had 16 kills and 13 digs.
San Benito boys’ water polo
The San Benito boys water polo team took care of host Watsonville on Monday by a comfortable 18-7 margin, and improved to 5-6 overall this year, 3-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League.
Jordan Schafer tied a team-high with three goals in the win, but set up his teammates nine different times.
“He did a real good job,” coach Tom Agan said of Schafer’s nine assists. “It was fun for everybody.”
San Benito will play in the Live Oak Polo Fest this weekend, opening at Valley Christian Friday at 2 p.m. The Balers will play two more matches on Saturday, although times and opponents are to be determined.
San Benito High girls’ water polo
The San Benito girls’ water polo team posted a similar score on host Watsonville Monday as they defeated the Wildcatz, 17-2.
“Everyone played, and I think everyone scored,” coach Hayley Vandercook said. “My goalie (Katie Thorpe) even played in the field.”
San Benito is now 3-1 in the TCAL, 9-5 overall.
San Benito will play at Stevenson on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 3:30 p.m.
San Benito High girls’ golf
The San Benito girls’ golf team took second place Monday after they compiled a team score of 216 at a four-team meet at Spring Hills Golf Course in Watsonville, where Yumi Kimura’s 51 paced the Lady Balers.
After Kimura’s 51, three Lady Balers each carded a 55 to round out the the scoring for San Benito. Jenny Glosser, Katie Moeller and Nicole Rianda each recorded 55s, while teammates Jordan Davies and Kendall Archer each finished the round with 67s.
