The San Benito girls soccer team had four goals from four different scorers and thwarted any chance of a King City comeback Monday to defeat the visiting Mustangs 4-2 in Hollister.
The non-league game was added to the schedule as another preseason test for the Lady ‘Balers as they prepare for two league games later this week, including Wednesday’s league-opener against Notre Dame and Friday’s road battle at Gilroy.
San Benito coach Mike Schurig was pleased to see multiple scorers Monday, something they’ll likely need Wednesday as Notre Dame brings the league’s top defense. However, Schurig was hoping for a goose egg on King City’s side.
“I feel good about it. I thought we should have won this game and that’s what we did,” Schurig said. “I also wanted a shutout, and we didn’t do that … But we got four goals from four different people. That’s nice.”
Sophie Coelho, who returned to the lineup after sitting out the Scotts Valley game with an injury, wasted little time. On a penalty kick in the 27th minute, Coelho put the Lady ‘Balers up 1-0, a score that would hold until the half.
In the second, Sara Yamasaki, who played in her first game this season after participating in the Olympic Development Program, assisted Hannah Cobb off a throw-in.
Yamasaki’s 30-yard throw-in from the left side, Schurig said, landed at the feet of Cobb, who scored the second goal of the day for San Benito in the 45th minute.
Two minutes later, JC Clayton scored on a free kick from 35 yards out. Schurig discussed the kick with his coaches before Clayton unleashed, commenting on how this was a shot the San Benito junior could deposit into the net.
“And boom,” Schurig said. “Beautiful.”
Yamasaki added to her line in the 53rd minute by finding the right side, and pushing San Benito ahead 4-0.
King City, however, would spoil the shutout by scoring two late goals in the 66th and the 76th minutes.
The Mustangs’ first score came after a King City shot ricocheted off the crossbar and then headed in by Maria Delarosa for a score. Ten minutes later, Leslie Chavez kicked a goal past goalie Emily Key that Schurig discussed after the game.
“There was some frustration there and frustration on a couple calls,” Schurig said. “There was some feeling that the goal kicked from Emily’s hands shouldn’t have been allowed. But that’s gonna happen sometimes.”
San Benito (4-2) will open the Tri-County Athletic League Wednesday when they host Notre Dame at 3:30 p.m. The Spirits are 3-1-6 and have only allowed six goals through 10 games.
In fact, three of those six ties ended 0-0.
“In my mind, they’re going to be our hardest competition in the TCAL because of their defense,” Schurig said. “It’ll be interesting.”

The San Benito freshmen girls basketball team improved to 7-0 last weekend after a 46-28 victory over St. Francis in the 11th annual tournament in Aptos.
The Lady ‘Balers went 3-0 in the tournament, which included a 36-19 win over Seaside and a narrow 36-34 win against Gilroy in the semifinals.
On Saturday against St. Francis, Nicole Rianda led San Benito with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Michelle Fortino had nine points and 11 rebounds. In fact, San Benito had 67 rebounds for the game, 36 on the offensive end, and Jessica Vest pulled down 11 while four others had six a piece.
Vest was named tournament MVP.
“We came out in the first quarter very sluggish. It may have been tired legs from the previous game with Gilroy,” coach Tom Dean said. “We had some fresh legs go in and the tempo picked up in the second quarter … Overall it was a good game and allowed everyone on the team to gain some experience.”
Against Gilroy, San Benito took the win from the free-throw line. The Lady ‘Balers shot 5 of 12 from the line while Gilroy was shut out, shooting 0 of 7.
San Benito will play at North Monterey County tonight at 4 p.m.
