‘Balers face Salinas today in championship
Monterey – Top-seeded San Benito High is all set to battle Salinas in the finals of the Tri-County Athletic League boys water polo tournament after the ‘Balers routed Carmel 14-6 on Thursday.

San Benito will face the Cowboys today at 4pm at Santa Catalina in the championship game.

“I think everybody’s ready,” ‘Balers coach Tom Agan said. “Everybody knows everything’s on the line.”

Thursday’s game against the Padres was in San Benito’s hands early. The ‘Balers held a 7-2 lead after the first quarter and pushed the lead to 11-2 at halftime before Agan put in his second-string players.

“I was pretty happy,” Agan said. “Our second string held pace with Carmel. We didn’t go backwards.”

James Schafer, Blane Curtice and Dave Smith led the ‘Balers with three goals. Jason Andrade and Jordan Schafer each had two and Phil Torres had one goal.

Agan said his team, which beat Salinas in the league opener, will need to mix things up to beat the Cowboys again.

“We’ve got to have some variety on offense,” Agan said. “If we play together as a team and use the different offenses we have and keep them off balance, we’ll be in great shape.”
