The San Benito boys and girls track and field teams easily defeated host Salinas Thursday in a Tri-County Athletic League dual meet.

The Haybalers won 89-47 while the girls nearly matched the outcome with an 89-48 victory.

“We did absolutely amazing,” coach Laurie Cottrell said. “The girls were phenomenal today. They had a goal in mind and they went beyond that goal.”

Cottrell said many of her athletes posted personal records at the meet, and they managed to take first place in the triple jump, long jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, 100 meters and both relays, among other events.

As for the boys, they got unexpected first- and second-place finishes in the two mile race and the 300-meter hurdles.

In the two mile, Frankie Rivera and Eddie Guzman went 1-2, while in the 300 hurdles, Austin Schmidt and Evan McFadden took first and second, respectively.

“Overall, the whole team did really well,” coach Iran White said. “Salinas is a tough team … If we gave them any openings, they could have beaten us and they did really well.”

Select individuals will compete this weekend at the Stanford Invitational for San Benito, while the team’s next meet will be in Hollister Thursday against Palma and Notre Dame.
