The San Benito boys basketball team had 10 different scorers Tuesday and easily defeated host Seaside 59-43 in non-conference play.

Marty Bueno’s 13 points led all Haybalers, while Tim Von Urff and Dominic Zanella each contributed 10 points to Tuesday’s effort.

“We played everybody and they did the job,” coach John Becerra said.

Seaside falls to 1-6 on the season, and are having a down year after being crowned Monterey Bay Athletic League champs the last two seasons in a row.

San Benito, though, returned to the win column and improves to 6-4 on the season.

Already 10 games into the season, the Haybalers will have their first home game on Friday when they host Santa Cruz at Mattson Gym.

Santa Cruz is currently 3-9, and defeated Seaside 66-65 just last week at the Luis A. Scattini Memorial Tournament at Palma High School in Salinas.

Tip-off for Friday’s contest is 7 p.m.

Menlo-Atherton’s strong 22-point second quarter proved to be the difference Tuesday night and they defeated the Anzar Hawks 67-42.

Steven Mockabee had a team-high 17 points behind three 3-pointers and Erik Olson added 11 points for Anzar.

The Hawks hung with Menlo in the first quarter, and even had a slim lead early in the second. But the Bears hit four of their eight 3-pointers in the second stanza, and outscored Anzar 22-9 before halftime.

“We had trouble getting the ball inside, trouble penetrating,” coach Ed Cecena said. “It was a tough night offensively. But we hung in there for a quarter.”

Menlo is one of the top teams in Division II, Cecena noted. Said the coach, “Hopefully, we’ll round into form come league.”

Anzar (3-5) will play next on Thursday against North Valley at home. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
