Salinas – Justine Hunter is on fire from behind the line.

After Monday’s win over Everett Alvarez, a league win in which Hunter had 28 points from the service line, including 12 in a row at one point, the junior setter topped her performance Wednesday at Alisal in Salinas.

Hunter delivered more than 30 points from behind the service line Wednesday, and lead the Lady ‘Balers to a three-game sweep of host Alisal 25-10, 25-7, 25-9.

“I kept looking over and saying, ‘Is Justine still serving?'” coach Dean Askanas said after the game. “Her serves have been great lately.”

In fact, Hunter remained behind the service line for practically the entire third game, as San Benito got out to a 17-0 lead to start.

Emily Kortsen led the Lady ‘Balers with a team-high 15 kills.

While this week’s wins over Alvarez and Alisal will look nice in the win column, as the Lady ‘Balers improved to 4-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League and 15-7 overall, the two matches made it difficult to gauge any improvement since the season started.

But that will all change next week when San Benito hosts two “monstrous” matches at Mattson Gym in Hollister.

On Tuesday, Salinas will be in town, while on Thursday, Notre Dame will enter Hollister looking to knock off the defending CCS champion Lady ‘Balers. Both matches are slated for 6:30pm.

Last Monday, Notre Dame edged Salinas in five games.

“Both of them are equal and I think we’re right around there, too,” Askanas said. “It’ll be a fight ’til the end. We’ve got to figure out how to come out on top.”

The volleyball coach said he’d prefer to play what will likely be the top two opponents in the TCAL this season in the same week. Said the coach, “If you’re going to play, you might as well play someone good.”

In recent discussions with his team, Askanas said the squad has been talking about playing a full game.

“When it comes down to playing a good team, we only play half the time,” he said. “It’s about our pride now. We need to come out and beat up on some good teams.”
