Small towns have a real disadvantage in today’s political arena. While the scope of problems faced by such places are not as large as those facing bigger municipalities, the range and technical level of expertise needed to resolve them are, regrettably, equally as great.
And the level of sophistication needed by San Juan Bautista to resolve its water, sewer and other infrastructure issues is every bit as high as the level of expertise needed in Fresno, Sacramento or New York City.
We acknowledge small cities like San Juan are at a disadvantage, but that is no excuse.
What is inexcusable is the action – or inaction – of its City Council, distracted by less than professional behavior with constant in-house bickering; wasting of its limited resources and time to “bicker” about its wonderful city chickens at nearly every turn, and marathon closed-session meetings that last longer than three hours.
What all this and more amounts to is a governmental body that is ineffective at best.
The people of San Juan Bautista take the City Council seriously when members speak and act. Their position is one of authority and leadership, as it should be.
However, San Juan residents deserve a Council that can put aside ego, personal agendas and vendettas and work together as leaders to prioritize how they are going to invest their time, energy and most importantly funds to insure residents have adequate services – like safe roads, police protection, a modern sewer system, adequate water storage for fire protection – today and into the future.
