The freshman, junior varsity and varsity cheerleading squads from San Benito High School, totaling 45 girls, came out last weekend for their annual cheerleading camp – the unofficial start to the team’s 2008-09 season.

Over a three-day period, the squad learned new dances, new stunts and pyramids, and worked on team-building exercises.

“It’s a fairly important camp,” coach Emily Bettencourt said. “It’s like our kick-off to the whole cheer season.”

One team-building exercise called for all 45 girls to lie on their stomachs, and by placing their feet on each other’s backs, lift themselves off the ground as one.

“If one buckles, the whole thing falls,” said Bettencourt, who added that the “snake” did fall several times at first. “There were plenty of exercises that made them work as a whole team.”

The camp is put on by the West Coast Rush, which is an All-Star cheerleading program, Bettencourt said.

While the team will be gearing up for their first practice in August, they’re also working toward their annual golf tournament fund-raiser on Aug. 27 at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club.

It is the cheerleading team’s largest fund-raiser of the year. For more information, contact Trisha Ocampo at (831) 245-8715.
