Hollister and San Juan Bautista were among two-thirds of California cities receiving an “F” grade on tobacco control in a recent report released by the American Lung Association.

The survey done by the organization grades cities – about 75 percent of them were included – in such general areas as smoke-free outdoor air, smoke-free housing and reducing sales of tobacco products, according to the report for 2009.

Within those categories, each city is graded on such classifications as dining, public events, non-smoking common areas for housing, tobacco retailer licensing and sales in pharmacies, according to the report, which includes other subcategories as well.

Hollister, San Juan Bautista and unincorporated San Benito County received “0” scores on all 15 categories.

In total, 271 cities and unincorporated areas received an “F” grade. The report also noted how four cities received an “A” grade and 15 cities got a “B.”
