The San Benito High School Scarlet Regiment Marching Band placed fourth place in the Marching /Music category at a competition Saturday in Newman. The band scored 86.
The first place winner was just five points away, which shows how competitive the Scarlet Regiment is among competitors.
Drum Major Michelle Juarez placed second in her division with a score of 87, up from her third-place finish the previous week at the Santa Cruz Band Review. A total of 28 high schools marched in Newman, with six in the Balers’ class.
Saturday morning Newman boosters served breakfast to the competitors. Afterward, band members put on their uniforms, with each member tucking hair under their shakos (hats), removing all jewelry, remove lint from their uniforms and polishing their shoes.
The march took place on the streets of Newman. Judges sat on a platform to watch the bands as they march past. As the Scarlet Regiment prepared to pass the judges, the color guard stood up front with Juarez in the middle of the street in front of the band. When a member of the judging staff gave the go ahead signal, the drum major twirled her mace and the color guard and marching band stepped off playing “Through Bolts and Bars.”
The music ranges from loud to soft and each rhythm section can be heard individually and as an ensemble. The judges evaluate the music to make sure the band plays it as required and watches marching formations.
After the competition, the band marched down the main street of Newman in front of the crowds.
