Boy Scouts from San Benito County took aim with .22-caliber rifles at targets about four inches in diameter 15 yards away at the Turkey Shoot Saturday at the sheriff’s target range.

Twenty-five Boy Scouts from the county took part in the annual event along with 105 Cub Scouts, who shot BB rifles.

The top-scoring Boy Scout was Isaac Cooper of Pack 428, who scored 105 points, and the top Cub marksmen were Ryan Sesody of Pack 400 and Jeremy Leim of Pack 436, who each scored 107.

Five Boy Scouts and 15 Cub Scouts earned certificates at the Turkey Shoot, which gets its name from the prizes awarded: the Scouts shoot in groups of eight and the top marksman in each group gets a gift certificate for a turkey.

The goal of the event, however, is to teach firearm safety, according to Scout Leader John Wrobel, the event’s coordinator.
