Corey Baldyga

Corey Baldyga, a student from Morgan Hill, was recently honored at a statewide awards ceremony for gifted children held by The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY).

Corey was invited based on an exceptional performance on a rigorous, above-grade-level test given to second through eighth grade Talent Search participants. Seventh and eighth graders took the SAT or ACT – the same tests used for college admissions. Second through sixth graders took the SCAT, an above-level test scaled for younger students.

Corey, who attends Jackson Elementary Elementary School, joined other award recipients at the recent state ceremony, and was individually honored by Johns Hopkins for his academic performance and promise.

Alexander Parrella

Air Force Airman Alexander J. Parrella graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of Matt and Lisa Parrella of Morgan Hill and a 2008 graduate of Ann Sobrato High School.

Rachel Giacalone

Rachel Giacalone, of San Martin, took third place in California High School Speech and Debate Championships in Culver City.

Rachel competed in numerous speech competitions over the past school year, placing in the top three in every tournament she competed in. She competed against more than 300 high school students to qualify for the State Championship, where she placed third overall. Rachel, a senior at Presentation High School, will attend SFSU in the fall. She is the daughter of Gerald and Luanne Giacalone of San Martin.

Benjamin Robbins

Air Force Airman Benjamin D. Robbins graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

He is the son of Robert Robbins of San Martin and a 2006 graduate of Monte Vista Christian High School.

Maya Isela Betancourt

Maya Isela Betancourt was born Feb. 8, 2009 at Hazel Hawkins Hospital to Richard and Rosalie Betancourt of Hollister. She weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces.
