State Sen. Anthony Cannella and Sen. Sam Blakeslee on Thursday honored Hollister resident and Miss Rodeo California 2011 Brittany Slaton, according to Cannella’s office.

The two senators representing area districts – Cannella in San Benito County – presented her a “Legislative Resolution that commended her current efforts to promote California’s storied rodeo heritage throughout the nation, and recognized her community involvement to such organizations as the local 4-H and Salinas Circle for Children, an organization that supports children with special needs,” according to a statement from Cannella.

Slaton lives in Hollister after graduating from Gavilan College where she earned an associate’s degree and a certificate in communications. She plans to continue her studies at San Jose State University where she will pursue a degree in communications and a minor in marketing, the statement noted.

According to Cannella’s office, she also served as the Special Needs Chair for the California High School Rodeo Association. In December of this year, she will be competing at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant for the opportunity to become the first lady of professional rodeo.

Cannella’s office noted that the annual Miss Rodeo California Pageant is held in Paso Robles. It selects a young woman to promote the professional sport of rodeo in California and to represent the state at rodeos and equestrian events across the country. The pageant also awards scholarships to help the winners advance their education.
