Surrounded by teammates, coaches and family, Gavilan College Rams football player Michael Henricksen signed a National Letter of Intent last week to attend and play football at Dixie State College (Division II) in St. George, Utah in the fall.
Henricksen, a Gavilan sophomore from Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, spent two seasons with the Rams as an offensive lineman. He joins a list of former Rams that will compete for various four-year colleges and universities across the country in 2009.
“We are very excited for Mike and all of our student-athletes who are transferring to universities to further their education and athletic careers,” said John Lango, Rams head football coach. “Mike has shown the dedication and hard work needed in the classroom and on the field to be a successful student-athlete.”
Gavilan women’s volleyball player Teresa Hodges also committed to a four-year school. She will be competing for the Eagles of Post University in Waterbury, Conn., in the fall. After making an official visit to the university, Hodges decided that Post is the best place to continue her education and athletic career.
“We’re extremely happy and excited for Teresa,” Rams volleyball coach Kevin Kramer said. “Her hard work and dedication has obviously paid off. It really goes to show you how beneficial participating at the junior college level can be for young athletes to help them reach their goals of receiving scholarships and playing at the four-year level.”
Hodges said she chose Post University because she felt comfortable with what the Eagles will be able to offer her, both academically and athletically.
“I feel that I can fit in and be successful right away. Post is very similar to Gavilan in that it’s a smaller school with quality people. There are fewer distractions in this type of environment, something that is important to me while completing my education and athletic career,” Hodges said.
After graduating from Point Loma High School in San Diego, Hodges joined the Lady Rams squad in 2007 and spent two seasons on the volleyball team. The outside hitter will focus her attention on becoming a defensive specialist for the Division II squad.
Other Rams moving on include: Tim Lango, Minnesota State University, Moorhead; Matt McCoy, San Jose State University; Michael Blewett, West Liberty University; Brett Norris; University of La Verne; and McDouglas Osakue, John Carrol University.
