The San Benito boys golf team finished in second place behind Salinas in a three-team meet Thursday at the par 36 Gabilan Course at Ridgemark.
Salinas finished with a 194, and San Benito had a 205. North Salinas finished third with a 253.
“We figured to have a little more of a home court advantage,” said Haybaler coach Mark Tinder. “We expected a little more from ourselves. It is easy to get discouraged and down. We just have to complete the round the best we can even though we may not be hitting the ball we want.”
Chris Shackleton, who scored a 37, edged out teammate Zach Zgragen by one stroke to finish as the Baler low scorer. In the team qualifier Wednesday, he recorded an eagle on the par 4 Diablo Course first hole.
In the previous qualifier, Shackleton just missed the cut by one stroke after hitting the ball out of bounds on the final hole.
“Chris is hitting the ball well,” Tinder said. “He is hitting his driver and irons well. He really wanted it after not qualifying the time before.”
Tinder said that he sees a lot of areas in which Zgragren can save a stroke or two to finish at par or under.
“I know he can do better,” Tinder said. “He is making those easy bogies. He is not playing bad. I have confidence he can turn around and shoot even par.”
Rounding out the scoring were Chase Gravens (39), Ryan Wood (44) and Jason Allen (47). Curtis Rhodes (49) was the non placer.
The next meet will be Monday at the Salinas Country Club. Twenty high schools will be participating in the 18-hole tournament.
“I am looking forward to that to see how we do in a full field,” Tinder said.
