Hollister – San Benito girls soccer coach Mike Schurig has placed the emphasis of this year’s team on firing shots at the goal.

That mission was accomplished Friday against Seaside as the ‘Balers peppered the Spartans with 40 shots on goal in a 3-0 win.

Despite the onslaught of shots, including 21 in the first half, San Benito (2-0) struggled early to find the back of the net and it was scoreless with 10 minutes remaining.

Junior Rachel Maheu finally broke the scoring drought when she knocked home a pass from junior Celina De La Cruz.

One minute later, Janessa Gillies fed a cross pass to freshman Sophie Coelho, who knocked home her second goal of the season.

Coelho followed by concluding a scintillating five-minute stretch when she took a near-identical pass from Rachael Jett and punch in her team-leading third goal of the season.

“At this time last year we were lucky if we had 10 shots on goal,” Schurig said. “As they shoot more, they will get better and more will get in the net.”

Action continues for San Benito this weekend in the Burlingame Thanksgiving Invitational, where the ‘Balers will try to extend their winning streak.
